Subject: Dolby Surround
I just wanted to clear up a few issues regarding Dolby Surround/Pro-Logic.
Re: the AIWA stereo with surround speakers mirrored in left speaker
This is not normal. I didn't catch whether *all* the sound was coming out
of the rear and left speakers simultaneously, or just the surround
sounds. If you want some more diagnostic help, email me directly. You
might want to check to make sure all cables are seated correctly, and
that your receiver/decoder is calibrated correctly according to the manual.
Re: Dolby Pro-Logic decoding.
There are *four* output channels on a Dolby Pro-Logic system. Surround,
Left Front, Right Front, and Center Front. On a plain Dolby Surround
system, you lose the center channel, and the sound that would go to it is
divvied equally between the other front channels.
The *encoding* process is called Dolby Stereo. It is the same process
used in theatres. This soundtrack is encoded on the standard two tracks
on a hi-fi VHS tape or laserdisc. (Or is generated on the fly with a
soundcard.) It can be played back on a Mono, Stereo, Dolby Surround,
Dolby Pro-Logic, or THX home system. These different home systems are
just ways of extracting better sound out of the standard Dolby Stereo
encoding.
If anyone wants more, email me for a longish article about Dolby Stereo
and how it can be synthesized using a soundcard.

Subject: Gabriel Knight - HELP
OK, I got the drivers, installed them, etc. but the game WILL NOT WORK.
Aaaargh! This is the first game that absolutely will not run with any of
the GUS setups. I even made a boot disk. Sbos won't work. Megaem won't
work (the game has to have the "noems highscan" going), and ultramid,
even though it says it does, WILL NOT WORK. I would really really REALLY
appreciate any and all help anyone could provide to make this darned
thing work! I have a GUS at the base settings, installed the Sierra
drivers, etc. I can get the game to run w/o sound, but who wants that?!
I have a 486/25 w/4MB RAM and a Doublespaced HD (DOS 6.2). Anyway, like
I said, I can get it to work if I choose no sound, so what gives?
Sierra's on-line helpers won't be back until Monday, but I would much
prefer to play the game today. You will have my utmost respect if you
could provide any help at all. Thank you very much in advance.

P.S. The version of ultramid supplied with gusdrv.exe is old. I tried
installing the game with both versions, too. :(

In the install procedure for the game, I think you have to tell it to
use XMS/EMS before it can play any digitized sounds. Also, if you're
using IRQ 7 for the SB/MIDI IRQ, you might experience problems with the
digital sound effects. Use IRQ 5 instead (if it's available).

No, not possible.

Look in the submit directory for megem23b.zip. If it's not there, search
the ls-lR file for it.

Hum... I had the same problem.
1) First of all, for everybody who owns a SB AND a GUS, remove
your SB, because there's some conflicts with it... and
MegaEm works for EVERY GAMES (for me...) even for SB-DAC
and/or General Midi. I had some problems to get digitized
sounds, but after removing my old SB, all worked fine!
Configuration: SET ULTRASND=220,5,5,11,7
SET BLASTER=A220 I7 D1 T1
2) For Prince II, you must check if for the option 'Memory Mode'
of your setup program you have selected "Use High Memory if
Available'.
After that, make your configuration with Sound Blater and
General Midi Device with the configuration bellow. (220, 7)
For me, ALL works very well. The sound In PP2 if very good. The
digitized Speech are Crystal Clear!!! Happy GUSing. Bye!

$
$ Hi GUSers,
$
$ I know this question has been asked before but never seen an answer on
$ the digest.
$ How do you get POP2 to run with Megaem? Is it possible to get digitized
$ sounds and MIDI music?
$ I have setup POP2 to work with SB for sounds and MT-32 for music,
$ but after I load Megaem and POP2 I get a message saying digitized sounds
$ will not be played because I don't have enough extended/expanded memory,
$ then it HANGS!
$
$ My configuration is:
$ 386DX-25, 8 MB RAM, ATI Ultra+ 2MB, DOS6.0, EMM386 (with EMS),
$ GUS rev 2.2 (default settings)
Well, this version (DOS 6) of EMM386 ought to be pooling your EMS/XMS as
one reserve of memory that can be used as either one, so all 8M should be
available. The only thing I can think of is that you are loading a disk
cache or some other program that is using up all EMS before you start
POP2. Try removing smartdrv, or using a cache size of say, 1024K. What
does the MEM command say about how much EMS memory you have available?
If you haven't done it yet, you should put the SB/MIDI IRQ on IRQ5 using
setgus.exe. Adjust your ULTRASND variable accordingly, and load MegaEm
with the /SBI5 switch. It works far better on IRQ5 than on 7.

Subject: Sierra Drivers
Sorry to have to ask this, but when everyone mentioned the sierra drivers
before, I didn't pay any attention since I didn't have any Sierra games.
However, I just purchased Gabriel Knight today and now I need the
drivers, but can't find them on epas. If anyone knows the filename or
would e-mail it to me, I would be most grateful... Thank you very much!

I might sugggest the "Sound Galaxy" midi cable; it has
midi-in/out and joystick port. In my experience, it works excellent
and is a LOT cheaper than the other cables and boxes (~$19.95 CDN,
versus ~$35 for the PAS cable, ~$50 for the Gravis box)
Anyone know where one could mailorder this easily in the US?
Thanks!

Subject: well, got sound with megaem with 0 problem
Hi everyone,
I've many many of the postings that megaem can't
run properly. well, isn't it that i'm lucky?
I've no problem at all! xwing got a little slow
down problem, but someone adviced me to remove the
mouse driver, and after i've removed it, no slow
downs! I've using emm386 with 2560k ems, and use
the parameter i=e000-efff. Prince2, KQ6, Super
Tetris are fine with this setup, and i've got no
problem at all (strange?!)
Well, for the person posted yesterday, i think
you have to pool more conventional memory out
and choose the general midi+sb option in prince2
setup. should be fine.
